Thoughts for a busy girl: making your home a haven

Over the years I've read lots of books and blogs on homemaking, its a topic that I am really interested in. I want my home to be inviting, clean, pretty, organized, comfy, and a breath of fresh air for my husband. A place where he can relax after work and feel at home.
Now that we have a baby in the mix, this makes it much harder. There are plenty of times when Viktor wakes up (he works nights) and the baby is crying, the house is a little messy, i am disheveled and there is no food ready to eat. Days like that stress us out, and makes it hard to enjoy our home.
What is the solution? I'm not sure, but i know there are some things that i can do and control to make our home a place of happiness and rest. Here are some things I am doing/want to be doing soon. If you have any other ideas, please leave a comment!

1. have plants and fresh flowers in your home. (those are my new plants! i like them..)
2. play music during the day.
3. bake something sweet once a week.
4. light some candles.
5. make myself pretty
6. get a swifter duster and dust every other day. (so much better than Windex and paper towels.)
7. sweep every other day.
8. use the dishwasher. (its amazing how much cleaner it looks if there's no dishes in the sink. also it uses less water than hand washing if you do a full load in the dishwasher.)
 9. try to have the baby happy when Viktor gets up. (this is not all up to me of course, but i can put some extra effort to make it happen.)
10. smile and be happy!

We are planning a garden

Today we went to Home Depot and bought some boards and seeds because we are going to make a raised vegetable garden. I am really excited for this, its something I've been looking forward to ever since we moved into this house. Hopefully on the next sunny day Viktor can build it, and I can start planting. Some of the seeds I need to start indoors and then transfer into the ground once its warm enough. I am so excited!!!!! Here are the seeds I got: heirloom tomato, sweet basil, bell pepper, cucumber, chives, carrot, dill, cherry tomato, and radish. I am also planning on planting potatoes, and maybe some strawberries. Can't wait for this all to go down. ;)

Watch this movie!

Viktor and I watched "Bobby" last night, and it was a really good movie. Its about the assassination of Bobby Kennedy, a story that i didn't really know about. I just recently watched some of the mini series The Kennedy's, so i knew a little about their family, but Viktor filled me in (he's smart like that).
Anyways, a really good movie, with a lot of good actors. I recommend it :)

*Oh and also i really like the style of everything in the 60s. Its all so pretty!

Reading tiny books

Me and Audrey read books together sometimes. But mostly she likes to chew on them. I like to see her little hands grab and hold things. Its just adorable.

Georgetown and a sunny day on the porch

We went out for breakfast today to Hangar Cafe in Georgetown. It was a spur of the moment thing. We ate crepes, which were pretty giant and delicious! Audrey was super sleepy the whole time, but refused to actually fall asleep :) You can see how she is fighting the sleep in the pictures. When we came home, it was super sunny and warm (finally!) so we cleaned up our front yard a bit and then sat out on the porch with some blankets for cushions. I looked through some magazines that had plants in them because im really excited to have some planted outside. Im also planning on having a small vegetable garden, but i really need to get that started. Oh by the way, we have started to let Kitsya outside a little, she was an indoor cat at the apartments. She really likes it, but is still super cautious. Selfishly, i dont want her to become a wild outdoor cat... i just want her to be my cuddly Kitsya..

A pet giraffe

On Tuesday, I decided to make a little stuffed giraffe for Audrey. I finished it on Wednesday! I have never completed a project that fast before. It took me about 9 months to make Peanut the elephant. Which reminds me, this little guy needs a name... Any suggestions?

Eating at home, this week

Steel cut oats w/apple and brown sugar.
(by the way, steel cut oats are so much tastier than quick oats! They take a little longer to cook, about 20 min, but if you make them with milk they turn out so creamy with a little bite in the center. Very worth it)
Farfel w/chicken, peas, mushrooms and leeks. Salad w/tomato, cucumber, green onion and avocado.
Avocado and cheese sandwiches w/vegetables. Tea. (Twice in one week!)
Beef w/noodle, bell pepper and onion stir fry. Tomatoes and radishes.
Homemade potato vareniki w/bacon bits and a salad.
Turkey sandwich, chips, and chicken noodle soup. Linden berry juice.
Cinnamon french toast w/ fruit.
Mashed potatoes w/lemon garlic shrimp and roasted vegetables.
This week has been a little busy with a sick baby, and Viktor caught her cold a couple days ago as well. So I did not cook as much, but tried to make fast and simple meals. Hope everyone gets well soon!

Downtown Kent

We drove down to our old neighborhood today to get a haircut and look at some thrift shops. Downtown Kent is actually a really nice place to hang out because there's lots of cool places right next to one another. I saw many cool antiques that i would like to get someday. How cool is that black and green kitchen cabinet? I want it for a future home!! Also i leaned that older women really love babies! I met about 10 today that were just gushing over Audrey. And she was smiling and giggling away, loving all the attention. I have a really friendly baby. Later, after Viktor got a haircut, we went to Wild Wheat Bakery to have some lunch and coffee. What a nice day it was...

life lately

Taking care of a sick baby is really hard. Period. I have felt a little overwhelmed, but Viktor is always here to help and i love him so much for it.
Yesterday i danced with my baby while listening to the Beetles. It made her smile and that made everything a little better.

Audrey loves her Kitsya

This picture tells it all, whenever Audrey sees Kitsya, she gets super excited and reaches her arms out to touch her. Kitsya on the other hand tries to avoid Audrey or run away whenever we bring them close together. And when we force them to cuddle, Kitsya just tolerates it. I love the look on her face here, just waiting it out.

The little baby is still sick however. I was hoping she would be better today, but i think she got a little worse. Its been a hard couple days. But we will get through this and after that be pros on what to do when she gets sick again.

*also Viktor's sister had a baby girl yesterday! Its very exciting because now Audrey will have a little girl cousin to grow up with. I hope they will be best friends. :)

I love to hug my little baby

Our little baby has been sick the past couple days, and its so sad. She has a runny nose and a cough. Its the worst feeling to not be able to do much of anything to help her. All i can do is hold her a lot, keep her warm, and wipe her nose. I realized yesterday that having babies takes a lot of selfless love. I got up many times last night to check on her and hold her, and rock her back to sleep. I love her so much and hope she gets better soon.

Eating at home.

Shrimp scampi. (you cant tell from the picture, but the noodles are covered with a lemony, white wine(ey?) sauce.
Chicken noodle soup w/a pastrami sandwich.
Spinach and cheese omelet w/vegetables and tea.
Beef stew w/romaine salad and bread.
Teriyaki chicken, mashed potatoes and a salad.
 Zuppa toscana w/crusty bread.
Tuna fish and avocado sandwich w/white grape juice.

(this was so delicious that i really want to share how i made it)
1. toast up some bread with oil on it.
2. take tuna out of the can and squeeze out excess water (mine was in water) put it in a bowl. add oil, vinegar, salt, pepper and parsley (i used dry flakes) stir it all together and add more to taste if needed.
3. cut an avocado in half and mash it up inside the skin. scoop it out onto your breads and top with tuna. add black pepper on top. Delicious and nutritious! (per Alton Brown)

*I found a nice little produce stand right next to our house, they sell mostly vegetables and fruits, plus some dairy. And i know people always say that vegetables and fruits are so expensive and its cheaper to eat fast food,(which is true) but if you compare the price of an average joe sit down restaurant, produce is much cheaper. (Especially if you eat seasonally and avoid the fruits that are not in season and therefore more expensive.)
For example, i bought enough veggies and fruits to last me a week+ and it cost me around $20. (and i buy a lot of vegetables) Buy some more substantial foods like rice, pasta and flour in bulk at Winco or Costco and your good to go for a while. By the way, Costco is also a great place to buy chicken and shrimp in bulk.

A busy evening

Most evenings me and Audrey try to make each other run out of energy. I try to make her sleepy enough to go to bed, and she tries to stay up as long as possible. Now this ranges from just fun and cute to "im so tired and why wont this baby go to sleep already..." :) Usually Viktor is able to help with keeping her entertained, but some days he stays up during the morning and sleeps in the evening. Those evenings are very interesting.

I'm not sure what it is, but the babe doesn't really like evenings. Maybe its because she is starting to feel tired and wishes she had more control over her body. Maybe she only likes natural light during the day and hates light bulbs. Maybe she remembers that soon im going to wrap her up into a burrito and put her to sleep and that makes her anxious... Whatever the reasons might be, she is usually a little cranky and needs a lot of attention.

Anyways, yesterday we had a fun and busy evening. She woke up from her nap at 6:30 and after she ate we read some books together. Then we played with some toys on the couch. Soon she started to get bored of the same old same old so we moved on to the floor and i brought out all the blocks. Oh how much fun she had!! She kept kicking her feet to make the blocks rattle around and raking at them with her hand. We built little towers and knocked them down. A block is a little big for her to grab on her own, so i would put them into her hand and she would wave it around a suck on it a little. It was glorious fun. :) After that we watched Bambi a little bit and then i gave her a bath. After she feel asleep i relaxed and drank some tea. Mmmmmmmm... Motherhood is a fun and busy job.
